Anthropic Launches Claude for Google Docs to Rival Google Gemini

Paid Claude subscribers can now edit spreadsheets, build presentations, and rewrite documents directly inside Google Workspace without copying text between windows.

Anthropic is taking its chatbot straight onto Google's home turf. On Wednesday, the AI startup released Claude for Google Workspace in public beta, allowing subscribers to edit documents, generate spreadsheet formulas, and assemble presentation slides without leaving their files.

Until now, using Claude on office work meant switching tabs constantly. You pasted text into a chat box, asked for revisions, copied the output, and fixed whatever formatting broke along the way. That friction is what Anthropic wants gone. The new integration places a sidebar inside Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides so the model can work on the actual canvas without forcing you to bounce between browser windows.

Editing inside the document

In Docs, users can highlight an awkward sentence and tell Claude to rewrite it, shorten it, or shift its tone. The changes apply straight to the file. Spreadsheets get an even heavier lift. Instead of hunting through nested formula menus or trying to recall syntax, you can ask Claude to analyze sales data, compile pivot tables, build charts, clean messy rows, and set up entirely new tabs. For Slides, the assistant can draft fresh slides from rough pointers or flag awkward visual layouts.

To keep the model from wrecking important work, Anthropic included guardrails. By default, the tool runs in an "Ask before edits" setting. It displays an approval card for each proposed alteration, letting users inspect and approve or reject the tweak before it touches the text. Anyone who prefers speed over caution can toggle the sidebar to "Accept all edits" and let the model work through tasks uninterrupted.

The bridge also runs in reverse through new web connectors. Users can start their workflow directly from Anthropic's web app rather than inside Google's suite. Someone can paste a spreadsheet link into Claude and ask it to restructure data, or feed in raw project notes to build a deck from scratch. On supported desktop setups, the target Google file opens right beside the conversation window, keeping the document and the prompt stream visible side by side.

Admin controls and the Gemini rivalry

Getting started requires an active paid tier. Anthropic restricted the beta rollout to Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise accounts, leaving free users out for now. Individual subscribers can grab the add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace. Once installed, it lives inside the document menu bar under Extensions, where clicking Claude brings up the sidebar.

For corporate environments, deployment takes an extra administrative step. Google Workspace administrators can enable the add-on for specific teams or an entire organisation through the Google Admin console. On the Anthropic side, primary owners of Team and Enterprise tiers must switch on the connectors before staff can link their files.

The rollout puts Anthropic in direct competition with Google Gemini, which already operates across Workspace as a native assistant. Google has pitched Gemini as the obvious assistant for anyone paying for its office software. By planting Claude directly inside Docs and Sheets, Anthropic gives paying customers an easy way to stick with their preferred LLM without abandoning Google's editing suite.
