If you mute a conversation on an iPhone, it keeps your pocket from buzzing every thirty seconds. What it has never done is keep your home screen tidy.
That red number sitting on the icon still counts every single text arriving in a silenced exchange. Apple looks ready to fix the annoyance.
Code spotted inside the iOS 27.2 Release Candidate indicates that Apple is developing an option to exclude muted discussions from the total unread badge tally in the Messages app. The finding was shared on X by researcher Aaron Perris, who spotted the references buried inside the pre-release software build.
The tweak targets a familiar irritation for anyone who relies on Apple Messages for high-volume group chats. Right now, choosing to mute a conversation suppresses audio chimes, lock screen banners and vibration alerts. Yet the app icon badge continues to climb anyway. Anyone who hates visual clutter is forced to open the thread just to clear out the numbers.
According to the details surfaced in the build, the behavior is being written directly into the platform code. It does not appear ready to roll out immediately. Apple is scheduled to launch iOS 27.2 next week, but the feature is not active in this release candidate build. That makes it more likely to appear in a later point release once development wraps up.
Right now, managing that red badge is strictly an all-or-nothing proposition. You can disable badges entirely in the system notification settings, or you can live with the badge reflecting every unread message sitting in your inbox. Disabling badges across the entire app means you lose quick visibility for direct messages from family or colleagues. Leaving badges switched on means staring at an inflated count fueled by chats you deliberately decided to ignore.
The uncovered code suggests the Messages app will finally reconcile those two behaviors by letting users align their badge totals with their actual notification preferences. Silenced threads will simply stay quiet in every sense of the word.
With iOS 27.2 arriving next week without the toggle exposed, the timeline shifts to Apple's subsequent beta cycle to see when the setting makes its official debut.
