Google has indefinitely delayed the rollout of Gemini Skills for Workspace users — just one day after it was scheduled to go live on October 13, 2026. The feature, meant to replace the older, siloed Gemini Gems with more flexible, conversational AI tools inside Gmail, Docs, and other Workspace apps, is now on hold “to ensure safe and reliable access for every enterprise user,” according to Google’s official blog post cited by Android Authority. No new date has been set. The company has removed all prior references to the October 13 launch from its Workspace release calendar. And it says it will share a revised timeline only when confirmed. For free-tier Gemini users, Skills are already rolling out, including in Gmail. But enterprise customers using Google Workspace won’t get them yet. The delay affects businesses relying on structured, admin-controlled AI integrations: Skills were designed to let admins deploy custom workflows (like auto-drafting meeting notes or summarising Slack threads) without forcing users into separate Gems interfaces. Now, those deployments stall. Google hasn’t said whether the delay stems from technical issues, security reviews, or policy alignment, only that reliability and safety are the priorities. The shift from Gems to Skills remains official strategy. But for Workspace admins waiting to configure, test, or train teams on the new system? It’s wait-and-see. Google says an update will come. Eventually.
