Google looks ready to pull a key escape hatch out of its default texting client.

An APK teardown of Google Messages beta version 20261002, conducted by Android Authority and reported by Android Headlines, points to the removal of the per-contact RCS switch. That small menu option, tucked away inside individual contact details under "Only send SMS and MMS messages," gives people granular control over who receives carrier SMS instead of chat features.

Strip that out, and the choice turns binary. You either keep Rich Communication Services switched on for every thread on your device or you disable it across the entire application.

Today, the per-contact override solves genuine daily frustrations. When an automated verification sender, an aggressive promotional channel, or a single glitchy contact profile acts up, switching just that conversation to standard SMS avoids broken threads. High-resolution photos, delivery receipts, and live typing indicators continue working normally with everyone else.

Beta code indicates Google is building warning banners into the interface to alert users before retiring the individual switch. Once the change takes effect, the only way to send standard SMS to a single recipient will be the automated fallback system, which triggers only after an RCS transmission fails outright.

That reliance on automatic fallback could irritate people dealing with erratic network conditions or intermittent delivery delays. RCS has expanded gaining cross-platform support on iPhones and modernising cellular chats across carriers. Yet carrier routing hiccups and commercial spam keep SMS relevant as a manual override when conversations stall.

Google has not shared an official timetable for when the per-contact setting will disappear. Because warning notices are already present in testing builds, the transition could arrive via a server-side rollout in an upcoming update.
