Google is pulling the plug on Safety Signal, stripping older LTE Pixel smartwatches of their built-in emergency connectivity. The shutdown takes effect on December 12, 2026, leaving owners of cellular Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 models without free standalone emergency protection.
The feature gave LTE watch owners an unusual perk. Without signing up for a standalone wireless plan or paying a monthly carrier fee, users could reach out for help straight from the wrist. If you went for a run without a handset, Safety Signal kept the watch wired into networks for critical services like Fall Detection, Safety Check, and Emergency SOS.
Now that safety net is vanishing. Google confirmed the move on its Pixel Watch community forum, writing that the decision came down to evolving its connectivity and safety setup.
Push alerts and emails are rolling out to affected users ahead of the deadline, starting a 30-day transition window. Once December 12 arrives, the free emergency bridge shuts off entirely.
What Stays and What Changes
The emergency tools themselves are not being erased from the watches. Fall Detection, which relies on onboard sensors and software algorithms to spot hard spills, still works. Emergency SOS and check-ins remain on the device. What disappears is the unpaid cellular link that backed them up.
To use those features away from home after December 12, users must activate a cellular line through an eSIM with a supported network operator. Without an active mobile subscription on the watch, calls and alert broadcasts will only function when the wearable is within Bluetooth reach of a companion smartphone or connected directly to a Wi-Fi network.
For anyone who bought an LTE variant specifically for standalone peace of mind without wanting another monthly bill, the change adds an unexpected ownership cost. Later generations, including the Pixel Watch 4 and Watch 5, skirt some of these network headaches by incorporating satellite connectivity, enabling emergency communication in remote locations without standard cellular towers.
For Watch 2 and Watch 3 owners, the clock is ticking. You have until the second week of December to either add an eSIM line or accept that your watch needs your phone nearby to call for help.
