Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max launches with Kirin 9050 Pro and LogicFolding chip design

The Mate 90 Pro Max is the first phone to ship with Huawei’s stacked LogicFolding processor architecture, delivering up to 40% faster GPU rendering and 140% NPU gains over the previous generation.

Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max is now official — and it’s not just another spec bump. The phone ships with the Kirin 9050 Pro, the first mobile chip to use Huawei’s LogicFolding architecture: a dual-layer stacked design connected via dense hybrid bonding. That physical stacking allows more transistors in the same footprint and enables higher sustained frequencies than conventional flat dies.

The chip’s CPU layout is nine-core across four clusters: one prime core, two big performance cores, four efficiency cores, and two ultra-low-power cores. Huawei claims a 31% performance uplift versus the prior Mate series. Benchmarks cited by Gizmochina show multi-core gains of ~23%, GPU rendering up 40%, and NPU performance jumping 140%.

The LogicFolding design isn’t shared across the whole Mate 90 lineup. The standard Mate 90 and Mate 90 Pro use non-stacked Kirin 9030 and 9035 chips respectively, both sharing the same underlying core architecture and HarmonyOS optimizations, but delivering smaller gains: 27% and 20% over the last generation.

Real-world gaming tests stand out. In Genshin Impact at 890P, the Mate 90 Pro Max held full frame rates while drawing just 4.2 W system power. Better than some Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 devices and on par with the iPhone 17 Pro Max (A19 Pro) and top-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 configurations. Similar efficiency was observed in Wuthering Waves, though that title remains resolution-locked on Huawei devices for now.

That edge applies mainly to native HarmonyOS ports. Games running through translation layers still perform well, but the efficiency advantage narrows. Synthetic CPU benchmarks still trail Apple’s A19 Pro and Qualcomm’s top Snapdragon chips, a reflection of ongoing manufacturing constraints. But the combination of architecture, system tuning, and measured thermal behavior marks a clear inflection point for Huawei’s silicon.

Huawei did not disclose pricing or regional availability in the source material. No launch date beyond “October 1” was specified, nor were battery capacity, display specs, or camera details provided.

What’s next? Wider rollout of native game ports, especially those lifting resolution locks. Will determine how much of this efficiency translates into daily use. For now, the Mate 90 Pro Max signals Huawei’s shift from catching up to competing on sustained performance and power management, not just peak numbers.
