OpenAI Brings GPT-6 to ChatGPT With New Intelligent UI

The update splits into two models, Sol for paid tiers and Luna for free users, and lets ChatGPT answer with charts, buttons and working calculators instead of just text.

OpenAI said Tuesday it is bringing GPT-6 to everyday ChatGPT conversations, a month after it first introduced the model family, and pairing the rollout with something it calls Intelligent UI.

Two versions are going out on different schedules. GPT-6 Sol starts rolling out immediately to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscribers. GPT-6 Luna, aimed at Free and Go users, begins rolling out Wednesday. OpenAI hasn't said how long either rollout will take to reach every account, or whether the free version carries any usage caps beyond what Free and Go already have.

The headline feature isn't really the model itself. It's Intelligent UI, OpenAI's name for letting ChatGPT decide, on the fly, whether a question is better answered with plain text, a diagram, a chart, or something you can actually poke at. Ask it to compare two things and it might lay the answer out side by side. Ask it to explain a process and it might build an interactive diagram instead of a wall of paragraphs.

OpenAI's own examples go further than static visuals. The company says ChatGPT can now spin up small working tools inside a chat: a calculator, a bill splitter, even simple games, generated on the spot to fit what you asked for rather than pulled from a fixed template. For more involved prompts, it can produce widgets you adjust yourself, letting you change an input and watch the output update in the same conversation.

There's also a change to how answers arrive. OpenAI says GPT-6 lets ChatGPT start responding before it has finished reasoning through a problem, adding information progressively rather than making you wait for the full chain of thought to wrap up. That's a shift from how reasoning-heavy models have typically worked, where the visible answer only shows up once the underlying process is done.

OpenAI hasn't published benchmark numbers for GPT-6 Sol or Luna alongside this announcement, and it isn't yet clear how the interactive widgets behave on mobile versus desktop, or whether third-party apps built on the API will get Intelligent UI at the same time. The company's blog post focuses on consumer ChatGPT rather than developer access.

The timing lines up with a broader run of AI product news this fall, as rivals including Google and Anthropic have been pushing their own assistants toward richer, more visual answers rather than plain chat threads. Whether Intelligent UI changes how people actually use ChatGPT day to day, or just dresses up the same answers, will depend on what shows up once Luna reaches Free accounts starting Wednesday.
