Sony has cut the price of a two-controller PlayStation 5 setup on its US store, timing the discount to land weeks before GTA 6 ships. PlayStation Direct now takes $40 off at checkout when shoppers buy a certified refurbished PS5 alongside a certified refurbished DualSense controller, according to Notebookcheck.

The math works out well for anyone who wants a backup controller cheap. A refurbished DualSense normally runs $59 in standard colors like white, Midnight Black, Cosmic Red, Galactic Purple, Starlight Blue and Gray Camouflage. Paired with a refurbished console and the discount applied, that extra pad effectively costs $19.

Sony sells the refurbished PS5 Digital Edition slim model for $499 and the refurbished disc version for $549. Add a standard-color refurbished DualSense and the $40 discount, and the bundle totals $518 for the Digital Edition or $568 for the disc console.

Metallic finishes cost more. Volcanic Red, Sterling Silver and Cobalt Blue controllers list at $64 each, so a bundle with one of those adds $24 to the console price after the discount, putting the disc console at $573 and the Digital Edition at $523.

Compare that to buying new. PlayStation Direct prices a new PS5 Digital Edition at $599, a new standard disc PS5 at $649 and a new Midnight Black DualSense at $74. A new console with a second new controller runs $673 for the Digital Edition or $723 for the disc model, which is $155 more than the matching refurbished bundle in either case. Notebookcheck also points out that a refurbished disc console with a second controller costs $31 less than a bare new Digital Edition with no extra controller at all.

The discount arrives after Sony raised US prices across the PS5 lineup earlier this year. The company added $100 to both standard PS5 models in April and pushed the PS5 Pro from $749.99 to $899.99. With this refurbished deal, Sony is effectively selling hardware at close to what new units cost before that increase.

Sony states that every certified refurbished unit passes the same functional testing as new PlayStation hardware, though units may carry minor cosmetic wear. Both consoles and controllers come with a 12-month manufacturer's warranty. Each console ships with a single DualSense included, and the disc model's vertical stand is sold separately for $29. A PlayStation Plus subscription is still required for online multiplayer.

The timing lines up with Rockstar Games' GTA 6 launch, set for November 19 on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Digital pre-loading opens November 12, and Rockstar still hasn't announced a PC release.

Sony is calling this a limited-time offer on PlayStation Direct's US store without listing an end date. Orders over $40 ship free, and the retailer allows returns within 30 days.
