Microsoft’s Xbox Elite Series 3 controller is real — and it’s shipping this holiday season. Leaked configurations on the Xbox Design Lab backend confirm four SKUs, TMR/Hall effect thumbsticks, voice-coil haptics, and a removable rechargeable battery pack. No official announcement yet. But the pieces are locking in fast.
The controller will not be a simple refresh. It’s Microsoft’s first pro-grade pad to ditch analog potentiometers for magnetic sensing, a move long standard on high-end PC controllers and now arriving on Xbox after years of fan requests. Hall effect sticks resist drift, wear, and calibration drift. TMR (tunnel magnetoresistance) variants go further, offering higher resolution and lower latency.
Neither appears on the current Elite Series 2 or the base Xbox Wireless Controller. Haptics shift too. Instead of eccentric rotating mass (ERM) motors, select models will use voice-coil actuators. The same tech behind DualSense’s nuanced feedback.
Impulse triggers join them, delivering game-specific tension and resistance. The scroll wheels spotted in August prototype photos default to audio controls: volume up/down, mute toggle, mic monitoring. Customization remains central. Buyers can mix and match top/bottom paddles, faceplates, and thumbstick caps.
One SKU, dubbed ‘Complete’. Bundles paddles, charging dock, and case. Pricing hasn’t been disclosed. But the Design Lab leak confirms tiered options: base model, haptics-enabled, paddle-ready, and full bundle.
Battery life isn’t mentioned in any leak. But the switch to a removable, rechargeable pack, versus the sealed unit in the Series 2. Suggests longer serviceability and easier swaps mid-session. This isn’t just about specs.
It’s about timing. Sony shipped DualSense Edge in early 2023. Nintendo’s Pro Controller still lacks haptics entirely. Microsoft has waited nearly six years since the Elite Series 2 launched in 2020.
Now, with PS5 hardware mature and Xbox Game Pass expanding globally, a next-gen elite controller closes a tangible gap, especially for competitive players who rely on precision, consistency, and repairability. Jez Corden of Windows Central expects an official reveal “soon”. Holiday 2026 is the target window. Pre-orders could open as early as late October.
