Amazon has abandoned Fire OS and the 'Fire' branding entirely, releasing three new Android tablets — including a 12-inch Pro model with Nanomatte display — starting at $229.99 in the US and Rs 20,499 in India.

Amazon has killed the Fire tablet. Not quietly — with fanfare, a new name, and a full Android pivot.

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, Alexa Tablet 11, and Alexa Tablet 8 are now live, and none run Fire OS. All ship with full Android, Google Play Store access, and deep Alexa+ integration. The Fire moniker is gone. So is the ecosystem lock-in.

The shift is stark. Where Fire tablets were loss leaders built around Amazon’s services and ads, these are premium slates designed to compete head-on with Apple and Samsung. The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro alone features a 12-inch 2.8K display, 120Hz refresh rate, 3:2 aspect ratio, 4nm eight-core chip, up to 16GB RAM, Wi-Fi 6E, and Dolby Atmos quad speakers.

It starts at $499.99 (Rs 42,999) for 8GB/128GB. Or $549.99 (Rs 47,499) with Nanomatte anti-glare glass, co-developed with Corning using photolithography to preserve contrast while cutting reflections. A top-tier configuration hits $679.99 (Rs 58,799) with 16GB RAM and 256GB storage.

The Alexa Tablet 11 sits between them: 11-inch 2.5K display, 90Hz, 8GB RAM, dual Dolby Atmos speakers, and up to 15 hours of video playback. It starts at $329.99 (Rs 28,499) for 64GB, $379.99 (Rs 32,799) for 128GB. No Nanomatte option.

The Alexa Tablet 8 is the entry point: 8.7-inch display, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, Wi-Fi 6, and up to 14 hours of video playback. It starts at $229.99 (Rs 19,899). Colors include Graphite, Rosette, and Teal.

All three models feature aluminum unibodies, optional stylus and keyboard accessories, and a dedicated Dynamic Tab for Alexa+. Which lives in the top-left corner (TechRadar) or lower-right (Tom’s Guide), depending on orientation. Alexa+ can examine screen content when explicitly permitted, offering contextual help, like identifying plants in photos or adding calendar events from displayed schedules.

Alexa+ is free on the devices themselves. A Prime membership or separate $19.99/month subscription unlocks cross-device continuity. But basic functionality works out of the box.

There’s also Kindle Mode: one tap silences notifications, reduces blue light, and shifts the display toward e-ink-like readability. Amazon claims up to 20 hours of battery life in this mode.

The Kids Tablet line relaunches alongside them, 8-inch and 11-inch versions with bumper cases, parental controls, and kid-safe Alexa+. Starting at $229.99 and $329.99 respectively.

Pricing in India hasn’t been officially confirmed by Amazon in the sources, but multiple outlets report Indian launch pricing aligned with US MSRP using prevailing exchange rates: Rs 19,899 for the Tablet 8, Rs 28,499 for the Tablet 11, and Rs 42,999 for the base Alexa Tablet 12 Pro. The Nanomatte variant is tipped to launch at Rs 47,499.

Preorders opened October 8. Shipping begins October 14 in the US, Canada, and Mexico, then October 19 in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain.

This isn’t just a spec bump. It’s Amazon’s first full-throated bid for tablet legitimacy. No compromises, no caveats, no Fire OS.
