Apple is set to announce its long-rumoured smart display, dubbed HomeView, at an event today at 9:00 a.m. ET. Hours before the showcase, code strings spotted inside the release candidate build of macOS 26.7 have exposed the hardware running its front-facing camera.

According to findings uncovered by leaker @itspdfu on X, the HomeView camera relies on an 11.3-megapixel Sony IMX614 RGB sensor capable of capturing images at 3,744 × 3,024 pixels. It records video at either 30 or 60 frames per second.

What it lacks is just as telling. The code indicates Apple left out an infrared sensor, ruling out secure 3D biometric unlocking via Face ID. The camera also appears unable to calculate a person's physical distance from the display.

Even without depth hardware, software tricks fill some of the gaps. The system can reportedly tell different human faces apart and run object recognition on household pets.

Lights and Device Tracking

Reporting from Bloomberg has framed the HomeView as Apple's answer to the Amazon Echo Show 8, which sells for $199 on Amazon. Bloomberg reports that the device features a roughly square 7-inch touchscreen running on an Apple A18 processor, with mounting choices that include a dedicated speaker base or a flat wall bracket.

The camera code hints at distinct ambient smart-home features. HomeView can reportedly spot and register the location of up to four compatible devices in the same room. More unusually, the camera can detect ambient light sources, reading both their brightness and tint. That capability could allow the hub to adjust connected smart lights automatically to match the room's conditions.

The hardware is built primarily as a command center for connected gadgets, but it will also carry FaceTime calling alongside voice support for Siri and Apple intelligence tools. Apple's live event starts at 9:00 a.m. ET, where official pricing and ship dates will finally be locked down.
