Apple's HomePod mini 2 goes on sale globally this Friday for $149, the same price as the device it replaces, according to an early look published by Matter Alpha ahead of launch.
The headline change isn't the chip or the sound, it's the shell. The speaker keeps its durable, stain-resistant woven fabric but now uses a dual-layer construction with a contrasting inner color: the green model hides a blue layer underneath, the blue model hides green, so the fabric shifts depending on the light. Matter Alpha describes the new green as "lively without being loud" and says the palette is softer than the first HomePod mini, meant to blend into a room rather than stand out on a shelf. The power cable keeps a matching woven finish.
Setup is unchanged in spirit if not necessarily execution: holding an iPhone near the speaker triggers an automatic prompt that walks through stereo pairing or linking to an Apple TV.
A Matter and Thread hub, not just a speaker
Where the HomePod mini 2 is being pitched hardest is as the cheapest door into Apple's smart home. It integrates HomeKit, Matter and Thread, and under HomePod Software 27.2 it can act as a Thread 1.4 border router, meaning it relays low-power smart home traffic the way a dedicated hub would. Matter Alpha reports that a new unit joined an existing Thread mesh originally created by a SmartThings hub without issue, and that switching the primary home hub role from a wired third-generation Apple TV to the wireless HomePod mini 2 caused no slowdown even with more than 40 connected devices.
The speaker runs on Apple's S10 chip, the same class of silicon Apple has used to push on-device features like computational audio and, per the report, eventual Siri AI capabilities. Apple has also opened credential-sharing tools to approved developers on the new software, a step toward fewer manual logins when adding third-party Matter devices.
Software adds Sound Glow, a touch lock
HomePod Software 27.2 brings a feature called Sound Glow, which animates album art and color across the speaker's top touch surface in sync with the music rather than looping the same pattern. The update also lets owners disable the touch panel entirely, useful for anyone whose kids, pets or stray elbows have set off music at 2 a.m.
On sound, Matter Alpha's early listening suggests the mini 2 is balanced and clear but comparatively flat next to the full-size HomePod, which the outlet says delivers noticeably stronger bass and volume. For background music or voice control in a kitchen or bedroom, that tradeoff is presumably the point of a $149 speaker rather than a $300-plus one.
The HomePod mini 2 still needs Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth to function, carries no battery, and leans on an Apple device to unlock its full feature set, so it remains squarely an Apple Home product rather than a standalone Bluetooth speaker. It ships Friday everywhere Apple sells hardware, at the same $149 it has carried since the original launched.
