Claude Haiku 5.5 is live — and it’s free for everyone, globally, starting today. Anthropic launched the model on October 7, replacing Haiku 4.5 as its fastest, lowest-latency offering. It’s available to all users across the free tier, Pro, Team, and Enterprise plans in the Claude web app, iOS, and Android apps, no upgrade required. You’ll find it in the model picker, positioned below Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5, both of which remain gated: Sonnet 5.5 has been free since late September. Opus 5.5 still requires a paid plan. Free users now have access to two current-generation models. Haiku and Sonnet, for the first time. That’s a meaningful shift in accessibility, especially against ChatGPT Free, which just rolled out OpenAI’s GPT-6 Luna on October 8. Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 beats Luna on every shared benchmark it reports: 72.4% vs. 48.9% on OSWorld 2.1 (computer-use simulation), and 39.2% vs. 16.4% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 (coding). Against its own predecessor, Haiku 4.5. Which scored just 15.7% on OSWorld, the jump is stark. But these are Anthropic’s internal numbers. No third-party validation exists yet. Decrypt tested Haiku 5.5 with a basic logic question and got a fast but incorrect answer. A reminder that speed isn’t accuracy. For developers, the pricing change is the real headline. Haiku 5.5 costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for requests up to 100,000 tokens, down from $1 and $5 for Haiku 4.5. That’s a 90% cut on inputs, 90% on outputs. Longer requests cost $0.50 and $2.50. Half the old rate. Anthropic says average savings land at ~75%. Sonnet 5.5 cache reads are also now half-price. GitHub added Haiku 5.5 to its paid Copilot plans on October 7, with a gradual rollout. And this week, Anthropic began issuing monthly developer credits: $100 for Max 5x, $200 for Max 20x, and up to $500 shared across Team plans. No credit for Pro or Free tiers. The credits apply to all models, including Opus. This isn’t just an incremental update. It’s a pricing reset, a performance claim, and a signal that Anthropic is doubling down on Haiku as its entry point. Not just for consumers, but for builders who need speed and scale without paying enterprise rates. Rollout is global. No regional restrictions. No waitlist. Just open the app, or hit the API. And pick Haiku 5.5.
