Apple's first foldable device arrives on October 23, but shoppers spending north of $2,000 on the iPhone Duo will miss out on several hardware staples found across the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. With the base iPhone 18 postponed until 2027 to clear room for the Duo, Apple's late-2026 catalogue forces a distinct choice between form factor and flagship utility.
The compromises on the Duo begin with basic device interaction. Apple skipped Face ID entirely, outfitting the foldable with Touch ID instead because the initial folding enclosure could not accommodate facial scanning hardware. The physical Action button, which replaced the mute toggle on premium iPhones back in 2023, is missing as well.
The biggest split lies in mobile imaging. The Duo ships without any telephoto lens. Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max carry a 48-megapixel telephoto camera delivering an 8x optical-quality reach, comparable to a 200mm lens on a dedicated camera. That is a noticeable leap from the 12-megapixel, 5x telephoto camera on the earlier iPhone 16 Pro.
Pro users also gain manual shooting tools completely absent on the foldable. The iPhone 18 Pro camera app adds dedicated aperture options from f/1.48 up to f/4.0. Users can tweak shutter duration with an on-screen slider, adjust white balance across conditions like Tungsten and Daylight with Kelvin feedback, and monitor exposure levels through a real-time three-segment histogram.
Even image editing creates separation between the handsets. Both phones run Apple Intelligence editing tools such as Clean Up, Extend, and Reframe to alter framing or erase objects. Yet only the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max offer a Reference toggle to immediately check the altered preview against the untouched capture.
Sensor hardware follows the same pattern. The iPhone 18 Pro retains a LiDAR scanner for augmented reality and focusing in dim light. The Duo drops it. MagSafe charging remains on both, though the altered dimensions of the folding frame mean some third-party MagSafe battery packs do not sit flush against the back.
With the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max already available and the $2,000-plus iPhone Duo arriving on October 23, early adopters will have to decide whether a folding screen justifies giving up Apple's best camera package.
