Google has quietly pushed an update to Gemini AI inside Google Sheets, promising quicker answers and steadier results when the assistant is asked to work across multiple cells. The company confirmed the rollout in an announcement covered by Gadgets 360, saying the changes started reaching accounts on October 20.

Google says the feature visibility can take up to 15 days to show up for everyone, which puts the full rollout window somewhere around early November for accounts that haven't seen it yet.

The update isn't going to every Google account. It's reaching Business Standard and Plus subscribers, Enterprise Standard and Plus customers, and people on Google AI Pro and Ultra plans. It also covers Google AI Pro for Education and AI Expanded Access tiers, which suggests Google is treating this as a Workspace and subscription-tier improvement rather than something free Gmail or Drive accounts get by default.

For IT admins, there's nothing to configure. Anyone in an organization that already has Gemini in Sheets switched on will get the updated version automatically. Everyone else can reach the assistant through the "Ask Gemini" button sitting in the top-right corner of the Sheets side panel, the same entry point that's existed for a while now.

What exactly changed under the hood is thin on detail. Google's framing is "faster responses" and "improved consistency across cells," which reads less like a new capability and more like a reliability pass on an existing one. Anyone who's used Gemini inside Sheets to summarize a column, clean up formatting, or generate a formula knows the assistant can be slow to answer and occasionally inconsistent when asked to repeat an action across a large range. This update appears aimed squarely at that friction rather than adding a flashy new trick.

It's a small move, but it fits a pattern. Google has spent much of 2026 folding Gemini deeper into Workspace apps, from Docs to Slides to Sheets, betting that spreadsheet users want an AI assistant that can handle repetitive cell-level work without supervision. The gap between "it works" and "it works reliably every time" matters more in a spreadsheet than almost anywhere else, since a single wrong formula or inconsistent cell can throw off an entire sheet.

There's no word yet on whether this update extends beyond Sheets to Gemini's presence in Docs or Slides, or whether free-tier Gemini app users will see any of this trickle down. Google hasn't put a firm end date on the rollout either, just the 15-day visibility window from the October 20 start. Users on eligible plans who haven't noticed a change yet should expect it within the next couple of weeks, and it's worth checking Workspace admin settings if the "Ask Gemini" button still looks and behaves the same as before.
