Google is folding its Spark personal agent directly into the Gemini chat screen on Android. Instead of burying the autonomous assistant inside a slide-out navigation menu, the updated interface places simple "Chat" and "Task" toggles right above the text input field.
Selecting Task puts Gemini Spark to work immediately. Google pitches the shift as a unified workspace, noting in the update that users can launch tasks whenever they want and monitor ongoing progress without switching screens.
Spark was originally introduced during Google I/O in May 2026 as an around-the-clock digital agent capable of handling multi-step tasks in the background. Until now, using it felt separate from ordinary conversations with the model. Shifting Spark under the simple label of Task pulls background automations directly into regular workflows.
Unified History and Action Filters
The changes go deeper than a couple of switcher tabs. Spark has vanished from the slide-out navigation drawer entirely. In its place sits a new Scheduled page that gathers automated routines and Spark jobs in one feed. That section splits jobs into four categories: Active, Paused, Completed, and Suggested.
Beneath the prompt area, the conversation list no longer carries the Recents tag. Standard chats and background tasks now share one combined history stream. To help users sort through the clutter, a filter menu at the top allows sorting between All, Ready, Needs attention, and In progress.
Google also appears to be quietly retiring the Spark moniker from customer-facing screens. In the account preferences menu, "Gemini Spark Settings" is now called "Task settings." It matches the company's broader habit of replacing internal codenames and flashy sub-brands with plain functional nouns once features move past their initial rollout.
Android Rollout and Tier Requirements
Access to the underlying automation engine remains gated behind paid tiers. Users still need an active Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription to trigger tasks and schedule automated actions.
The refreshed layout is currently rolling out through a server-side switch on Android devices. Google has not yet pushed the interface changes to iOS or the Gemini web portal.
