Free users can now edit PDFs, Docs, Sheets, and more inside Gemini chat—no subscription, no download. But mobile gets only PDFs. Web unlocks the rest.

Google Gemini now lets free users edit PDFs, Docs, and other files directly inside chat — no download or external app needed. The feature launched globally on October 29 and is live for all free accounts in every language where the Gemini app is available, including India and the US.

No Gemini Advanced subscription required. Notebookcheck confirmed it was active in Germany on November 1. Hitechreports confirms it’s live in both markets as of Friday morning. It works differently across platforms: Android and iOS users can only edit PDFs in-app.

Full editing, of Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Markdown, TXT, and code, requires the web version at gemini.google.com. So if you ask Gemini to draft a pitch deck and want to tweak bullet points, you’ll need a laptop or desktop. The workflow is simple: ask Gemini to generate a file, and a preview appears below its reply.

Click into the text to type manually. Highlight a sentence to ask Gemini to rewrite it, or just ask a question about that section. A full-screen button expands the editor. Finished files export as PDF or save straight to Google Drive.

Google’s demo shows a student snapping handwritten notes, turning them into a PDF study guide, then editing definitions or adding citations, all inside one chat. But this isn’t Acrobat or Notion. It doesn’t open uploaded files for editing. It only edits files Gemini itself generated.

And it doesn’t change Gemini’s data policy: everything typed or edited in these files stays part of the chat history. That means it’s subject to the same privacy terms, human reviewers may see it, and chats with reviewer access are retained up to three years after deletion. Google explicitly warns against pasting bank statements, medical records, or job applications.

The update arrives just weeks after Google restricted free users to Gemini 2.0 Flash, the lighter, faster model, cutting access to Gemini 2.5 Pro and 2.5 Flash on October 9. Yet editing remains fully unlocked for everyone. That makes it one of the few new capabilities Google has added to the free tier this year, not stripped away.

Availability is immediate. No rollout delay. No region lock. Just open gemini.google.com or the Gemini app, ask for a file, and start editing.
