Five years after introducing the Tensor chip, Google is closing the book on the phones that launched it. The company began rolling out its October 2026 software release on October 6, delivering build CP3A.261005.002.A1 across the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro and 7a. For anyone holding onto a standard Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, this package is almost certainly the end of the line.

Google promises five years of OS and security patches for devices up to the Pixel 7a, calculated from the day each handset hit the US Google Store. Both the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro arrived in October 2021. That support window expires this month. While Google has not officially pinned down an exact expiration date for the last build, Droid Life reported that the company flagged end-of-life status back in July during the Android 17 QPR2 beta announcement. Android Authority also highlighted this release as the probable curtain call, though it noted a November release could theoretically slip past the deadline.

At launch, Google committed to just three major Android version upgrades alongside five years of security maintenance. Subsequent policy shifts extended that software runway, eventually lifting the hardware all the way to Android 17.

Security Patches Without New Perks

Do not expect any fresh features from this installation. Google reserved all three bug fixes in the release notes for the Pixel 8 through Pixel 11 generations. The older flagships receive solely the October 5, 2026 security patch level.

Even so, installing it remains important. The Android Security Bulletin for October documents multiple critical flaws. The steepest vulnerability targets the core System component, where an attacker could execute local privilege escalation without needing extra permissions or user interaction. Google reported no active exploits in the wild this month, but unpatched code on older phones will stay vulnerable to whatever comes next.

Where Newer Pixels Stand

Owners of other older Pixels have a bit more time left. The Pixel 6a landed in July 2022 and stays supported until July 2027. Both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro retain software backing through October 2027, followed by the Pixel 7a in May 2028. From the Pixel 8 onward, Google moved to an industry-leading seven-year promise.

Delivery has not been clean for legacy owners, though. Google skipped the August patch entirely for both the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 families before returning in September. Owners should expect the rollout to appear gradually over the coming week depending on carrier testing.
