Online orders for Apple's folding iPhone Duo pushed back to January 2027 almost immediately after pre-orders opened on October 16. But Apple did not commit every unit to the digital line.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of marketing, told TechRadar that the company preserved inventory specifically for retail locations ahead of the device's official launch on Friday, October 23, 2026.

"You know, we didn't ship them all away during the pre-order, we have them available at the stores, we're excited," Joswiak said. He confirmed he plans to greet buyers in person at Apple's flagship Fifth Avenue glass cube in New York City on Friday morning.

Long Pre-Order Queues

The reserve stock provides a narrow window of hope for shoppers who missed the initial order window. Attempting to buy an iPhone Duo on Apple's online store right now yields estimated delivery times running into January 2027 across every finish, carrier configuration, and storage tier.

Apple previously indicated walk-in availability would be tight. Joswiak acknowledged the intense early traffic, calling initial pre-order demand "extraordinary" following the phone's formal unveiling in September. "People got it," Joswiak said. "They understood what we were doing."

Whether that retail supply can survive morning crowds remains an open question. Apple has not disclosed how many units each physical store will receive. Buyers looking to secure a device without waiting three months will have to line up early or try their luck with in-store pickup reservations.

Software Ready for Opening Day

The hardware arrives alongside third-party software updates built specifically around the folding mechanism. A refreshed Major League Baseball app launched ahead of the World Series, designed to use the folding panel in multiple orientations. When positioned upright like an open notebook, the software shows live game broadcasts on the top portion while updating box scores on the bottom. It also supports side-by-side multitasking with other software on the internal display.

Joswiak pointed to the importance of sports viewing on Apple hardware, noting the company's broadcast tie-ins. A Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro Max previously used to broadcast Friday Night Baseball even earned a spot in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Other software makers are pushing similar dual-screen updates on day one, including streaming interfaces on Netflix, content creation in Edits, and music app DeckMan, which mimics a vintage cassette deck across the fold.

Stores across the United States open doors on Friday morning, marking the first time Apple's folding phone hits retail counters.
