Apple is adding a ‘Lock Controls’ setting for all HomePod models — including the 2018 first-gen unit, with the iOS 27.2 and HomePod software 27.2 updates, rolling out next week. The feature disables touch responses on the top cap, stopping accidental or unintended triggers from kids, pets, or phantom taps, while preserving critical functions like Intercom, timers, alarms, Check In, and FaceTime calls.
It appears in the Home app under each HomePod’s accessory settings after both iPhone and speaker are updated. No hardware change is involved: this is purely a software toggle, available across the entire HomePod lineup. The setting does not affect voice commands via Siri or remote control via iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Apple confirms the restriction applies only to physical touch input, not audio playback initiation or volume adjustment via touch, which are already disabled when Lock Controls is on. Price, availability, and release timing remain unchanged: iOS 27.2 is a free update arriving globally next week. HomePod 27.2 ships simultaneously. There is no new HomePod hardware tied to this release.
