iFixit Teardown Points To Hinge Stress Behind iPhone Duo Screen Cracks

A repair-focused teardown gave Apple's first foldable the best repairability score of any foldable phone so far, while flagging the hinge junction it believes is causing cracked displays.

Apple's first folding iPhone has a repair score of 5 out of 10, the highest iFixit has ever given a foldable, and the repair site thinks it may also know why some Duo screens are cracking.

The teardown outfit published a video and blog post on Sunday walking through the iPhone Duo's internals, piece by piece. The headline numbers: 5/10 for repairability, ahead of the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, which both scored 4/10.

What's easy to fix, and what isn't

The outer display comes off intact, something iFixit says didn't happen with Samsung's Fold8. Batteries release with a small electrical charge applied to the adhesive, the same approach Apple introduced on the iPhone 16, and iFixit called it the best battery removal it's seen on any foldable yet. The nano-texture cover layer peels away easily too, by design, so Apple can offer a cheap swap if it scratches: $19 with AppleCare+, $49 without.

The inner screen is a different story. IFixit describes Apple's panel as a 10-layer stack, and getting into it means working through a lot of adhesive and heat to free the trim. Combined with the hinge assembly, it's what iFixit calls the Duo's biggest repair weakness, alongside a repair manual Apple made available on day one, which helped the score.

The Duo also uses an unstacked logic board, the first iPhone to do that since the iPhone 8, which is apparently one of the tricks Apple used to keep the phone thin.

A theory on the cracks

IFixit dusted the hinge with UV-reactive particles and found less got in than on the Fold8 or the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, though enough worked its way in to make the hinge crunch during use. Separately, YouTuber JerryRigEverything's own dust test reportedly let in enough grit to knock out the magnets that hold the Duo closed. Apple rates the phone IP68 for dust and water, but iFixit's conclusion is blunt: "We hoped Apple would solve this problem, but sadly it seems like the Duo's got the same dirt-phobia as its folding cousins."

On the cracked-screen reports that have surfaced since launch, iFixit built a 3D model of the hinge from its own teardown footage, patent filings and CT scans, then lined it up against where the damage has been showing up. The failures cluster not at the flex cable itself but just below it, at a spot where several structural edges meet and the hinge's support for the thin display changes shape as it bends. IFixit also flags the hinge's curved rails, which track the screen's pivot points, as a possible culprit if one isn't retracting the way it should. The site stops short of a firm diagnosis, calling it one plausible explanation among a few, including trapped debris, repeated flexing, or a manufacturing defect, rather than a confirmed fault.

IFixit's take lands somewhere between impressed and wary. "This is the most repairable foldable smartphone we've seen so far, and it's still going to be a bear to repair," the team wrote, adding that Apple did well for a first attempt but that owners should "baby that screen" and stay away from sand. Apple hasn't commented on the cracking reports, and iFixit says further testing is still needed before anyone can call this settled.
