IPhone Duo preorders opened at 5 a.m. PT on Friday — and closed in practice two minutes later. By 5:02, every configuration showed delivery estimates slipping past October 23, then past November, then into late January. That’s not a backlog. That’s a blackout.
And it’s global: Apple shipped the iPhone Duo to more than 70 countries at launch, despite internal plans to start with just the US and China, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The result? A vanishingly thin slice of early production spread across dozens of markets, none of which got enough units to matter.
No official stock numbers have been released. Apple has not confirmed how many, if any. IPhone Duo units will be available in stores on October 23. It has not said when retail inventory might appear.
It has not updated preorder timelines. It has not apologized. It has only waited for the next earnings call. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the US.
In India, it’s Rs 1,89,900. That price buys a foldable phone with a nanotexture display layer designed to be swapped out as the crease wears, a detail Apple’s new CEO, Ternus, personally championed during development. But engineering foresight didn’t extend to logistics. Gurman reports Apple knew supply would be “severely constrained” yet pushed ahead anyway, aiming for an early fiscal Q1 launch.
The timing is brutal: anyone who gets their Duo in late January will have held it for less than nine months before the iPhone Duo 2 is expected. Meanwhile, Apple is quietly benefiting from the vacuum. Gurman notes that empty iPhone Duo shelves may steer buyers toward the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.
Priced at $1,199 and $1,399, especially now that those models are appearing on Amazon with stock. That’s not a pivot. It’s a contingency plan baked into the rollout. The iPhone Duo isn’t delayed.
It’s rationed. And the rationing started before the first preorder button was tapped.
