Lego is adding another battery-powered workhorse to its construction lineup with the Technic Volvo L120 Electric Wheel Loader, priced at $71. First reported on Thursday by 9to5Toys, the 973-piece kit is built for younger hobbyists who want a hands-on mechanical project tied to modern, zero-emission heavy machinery.
Instead of packing in expensive motors or companion phone apps, the Volvo L120 relies entirely on tactile mechanics. The build incorporates functional articulated steering, which splits the frame so the vehicle can pivot sharply at its midsection. Up front, builders put together a heavy-duty shovel that can tilt and lift manually, replicating how actual front loaders handle materials on real-world work sites.
The mechanical lessons continue beneath the body panels. Pop open the rear engine cover, and you find a trio of interconnected spinning gears. These gears turn together to give builders a clear view of how gear ratios and rotational motion work inside a machine. Because Volvo designed the actual L120 as a clean-energy machine, Lego skipped traditional exhaust stacks. In their place, the set supplies a small brick-built charging pedestal, letting builders park the loader and simulate plugging it in between shifts.
Lego sets in the Technic catalog often drift toward extreme ends of the spectrum, swinging between pocket-sized buggies and enormous, multi-motor flagship sets that cost hundreds of dollars. Intermediate sets that stay under 1,000 pieces fill an important gap. They give kids who have outgrown standard system bricks an approachable introduction to axles and structural beams without asking parents to spend $200 or more. At $71 for 973 pieces, it delivers a competitive piece count for an officially licensed commercial vehicle build.
And the electric branding marks an interesting pivot for construction toys. Heavy equipment manufacturers like Volvo have spent recent years pushing battery power into urban worksites to reduce local air emissions and engine noise. Translating that shift into plastic bricks keeps the machinery feeling relevant for today's kids, even if the internal mechanics still depend on classic plastic gear wheels rather than lithium cells.
The electric wheel loader enters Lego's catalog as a practical project for young builders ready to tackle moving parts and gear assemblies.
