Apple has not announced a MacBook Ultra. But macOS 27.2 — now in its third beta, contains touchscreen code that points to one coming soon. Not just any Mac: the first Mac with a touchscreen, and likely the first with an OLED display. And it’s expected to ship as early as November 2026, replacing the current MacBook Pro line after a five-year design cycle.
The $1,839 MacBook Pro on Amazon is the last of its generation. It won’t be refreshed. It will be succeeded. By something new.
Something called, per multiple reports, the MacBook Ultra. That name isn’t official. But the clues are stacking up. And they’re all in the OS.
Not in a press release. Not in a keynote. In the code. A new Dock animation.
A screen-protector icon for a device that doesn’t yet exist. Safari, Photos, Notes, and Quick Look all flagged for touch support. Pull-to-refresh already landed in macOS 27 Golden Gate. Now comes right-click simulation via long-press.
All of it buried in beta builds, not marketing slides. The hardware shift would be radical. OLED instead of Mini-LED. Thinner.
Lighter. A design break since the M1 Max MacBook Pro launched in October 2021. No release date. No specs beyond those hints.
No price. Just code, timing, and the quiet certainty that Apple is preparing to ship a touchscreen Mac. And it won’t be called ‘MacBook Pro’. The rollout begins with developers.
They’re being asked to submit iPhone Duo-ready apps. That’s another signal: Apple is aligning its platforms. Not merging them. But syncing their input models.
Touch matters now, even on desktop. MacOS 27.2 ships to the public as a stable update before the end of October. The MacBook Ultra? Likely November.
Or later. But not next year.
