Laptop makers spent a decade forcing buyers to pick between trip-wire protection and universal ports. Apple answered that dilemma by bringing back MagSafe as a dedicated, proprietary slot. Microsoft chose a different route at its Wednesday hardware event, showing off a magnetic breakaway mechanism built around an ordinary USB-C port on the Surface Laptop Ultra.
Called Magnetic Connect, the system pairs a snap-on power cord with the USB-C port sitting on the machine's right edge. Windows and Surface head Pavan Davuluri demonstrated the attachment during the presentation, explaining that users simply bring the connector near the opening and it snaps into position.
The laptop side remains a fully standard USB-C connection. When the magnetic charging cable stays behind in a backpack, any standard USB-C brick, display cable or external storage drive plugs directly into that exact socket.
That solves a packaging compromise that Apple never resolved. On MacBooks, MagSafe occupies a dedicated slice of chassis real estate strictly for power. When you do not need MagSafe, that connector sits idle while you juggle your remaining ports. Microsoft's approach replaces the company's older Surface Connect slot without sacrificing a general-purpose peripheral bus.
Hardware and Preorder Timeline
Under the keyboard, the machine carries serious silicon meant for intensive work. The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599 in the United States, configured with an 18-core processor, 24GB of memory and 512GB of solid-state storage. Graphics duties run on Nvidia's RTX Spark chip, which Microsoft pitched for handling creative workloads, PC gaming and local artificial intelligence models.
Preorders for the machine opened following the showcase, and retail units are scheduled to begin shipping on October 16.
Whether other PC manufacturers license the mechanism or engineer their own equivalents remains unclear. USB-C's open nature has long made breakaway designs awkward, usually leaving users to buy sketchy third-party magnetic dongles that risk damaging port pins. Building the breakaway latch directly into the cable head while leaving the machine socket standard eliminates that gamble.
If the hardware holds up without wearing out port tolerances over years of yanked cords, Microsoft may have finally found the right template for charging high-end portable PCs.
