Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra ships with a magnetic USB-C charger — the first laptop to do so. It’s patent-pending. It’s exclusive to the Ultra. And it only works on one of the device’s three USB-C ports: the one on the right edge. No other laptop, not even other Nvidia RTX Spark models from Asus, Lenovo or MSI, has it. Not yet. The cable snaps in like a MacBook charger, but unlike Apple’s MagSafe, this one uses USB-C as its physical interface, not a proprietary connector. It delivers up to 140 W. It’s thicker than standard USB-C cables, and won’t fit most other USB-C devices. Smartphones included. Microsoft says future PCs could adopt it, but offers no timeline or roadmap. The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,600 in the US. Pre-orders are live. In India, it’s priced at Rs 2,39,999. That’s ₹30,000 more than the base Surface Laptop Studio 3, and nearly double the starting price of the cheapest RTX Spark laptop from Lenovo. The magnetic port doesn’t replace USB-C functionality elsewhere on the machine: all three ports still accept standard USB-C chargers, data cables, and displays. But only the right-edge port accepts the magnetic version. Why just one? Notebookcheck notes Microsoft hasn’t explained it. And the design means the bulky magnetic connector could block adjacent ports depending on chassis layout. The Surface Laptop Ultra is the first and only device shipping with this feature. It arrives October 16.
