A courtroom fight between two tech giants over proprietary talent and silicon secrets just took an unexpected turn into physical hardware.

OpenAI filed court papers alleging that a former engineer took more than a hundred confidential files detailing unannounced OpenAI hardware before leaving to rejoin Apple. According to the filing, the data transfer took place on June 2, 2026, which marked the engineer's final day at OpenAI.

Apple disputed the accusations. Speaking to Reuters, the iPhone maker stated that it found no proof to support OpenAI's claims, pointing out that internal rules strictly forbid employees from bringing intellectual property over from previous jobs.

Missing Schematics and Assembly Details

The dispute reveals just how serious OpenAI is about building its own consumer gear. According to OpenAI, the disputed files covered at least one unreleased gadget currently under development. The documents reportedly contained detailed images of unreleased prototypes along with manufacturing specifications, vendor rosters, cosmetic finish requirements, and internal reports detailing component coatings and weather sealing.

The employee in question had previously worked at Apple, spent six months inside OpenAI's hardware group, and then returned to Apple. OpenAI alleged that after heading back, the engineer delivered an internal presentation about OpenAI's product roadmap to senior executives at Apple, including the vice president overseeing operations across Asia.

OpenAI voiced concern in the filing that those details are circulating among Apple design teams as Apple prepares its own pipeline of hardware designed around artificial intelligence. OpenAI stated that it approached Apple directly to request formal confirmation that none of the files were retained or used, but says Apple failed to provide those guarantees.

A Widening Trade Secret Fight

This counter-offensive lands in the middle of a legal battle that Apple actually started. Apple filed a trade secrets complaint against OpenAI in July, claiming departing engineers improperly took confidential materials with them to help OpenAI build out its technical teams. By August, Apple told the court that a forensic review of an ex-employee's laptop yielded what it described as shocking proof of misappropriation.

OpenAI's latest filing turns the exact same forensic playbook back on Cupertino. Neither side has publicly identified the specific consumer hardware being designed behind closed doors. But with both companies pushing deeper into purpose-built consumer electronics, the dispute suggests their future product roadmaps are colliding much faster than either planned.

Both companies remain locked in discovery, with further hearings expected before the district judge later this year.
