Grand Theft Auto 6 may arrive on desktop rigs much earlier than history suggested. Rockstar Games is aiming to release the PC edition within the first three months of 2027, according to a report from GamesBeat citing four people familiar with the studio's schedule.
That would mark a notable change of pace for the developer. PC players had to wait nearly two full years to get their hands on Grand Theft Auto 5 after its initial console rollout, and Red Dead Redemption 2 took over twelve months to make the same jump. If the 2027 window holds, desktop players will see the game roughly fourteen months after its scheduled November 19 debut on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
Rockstar has not commented on the report.
The studio has historically prioritized consoles, leaving PC enthusiasts to wonder whether the gap was driven by port optimization headaches or an effort to encourage double purchases across systems. Yet market pressures are shifting. The persistent hardware pricing crunches across consumer electronics have made modern consoles pricier, while industry projections suggest the PC gaming audience will cross one billion players by 2028.
There is also the matter of sustained cash flow. The current iteration of GTA Online pulls in over $1 million every day and has generated more than $5 billion across its run. Bringing desktop players into a refreshed multiplayer ecosystem sooner rather than later could provide a much steadier foundation than waiting two years to capture a second wave of box sales.
Leaks And Controversy
The road to release has already been messy. Rockstar and parent company Take-Two Interactive have spent years combating leaks, beginning with widespread developmental footage dumps in 2022 and continuing with leaked clips distributed by a hacker outfit called CyberLeek.
The official rollout strategy has drawn fire as well. Word that the title will skip physical disc formats entirely frustrated physical media collectors, while reports that specific car customization options and clothing shops are locked behind a $100 Ultimate edition sparked immediate backlash among fans.
None of that seems poised to dent the bottom line. Industry analysts still forecast that Grand Theft Auto 6 will generate between $3 billion and $5 billion during its opening week on consoles alone.
For now, the November 19 console launch remains the immediate milestone. Whether Rockstar sticks to the proposed early 2027 desktop timeline will depend on how quickly it wrangles PC optimization across varied hardware setups once the console edition is out the door.
