Android 17 will be the end of the line for the Galaxy Tab S9 family.

Samsung is preparing to ship One UI 9 to the Galaxy Tab S9, Galaxy Tab S9+, Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, Galaxy Tab S9 FE and Galaxy Tab S9 FE+. Once that update lands, none of those five devices will receive another major Android version.

They are not getting abandoned right away. Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab S9 lineup in 2023 with Android 13 and One UI 5.1, promising four generations of platform upgrades and five years of security maintenance. While platform development stops after One UI 9, security patches will continue to arrive into 2028.

The Seven-Year Divide

The cutoff highlights a sharp generational divide across Samsung's tablet catalog.

In 2024, Samsung changed course with the Galaxy Tab S10 series, matching its flagship phone policy by offering seven full years of operating system updates and security patches. That extended promise carried over to the Galaxy Tab S11 family and the recent Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra. Even cheaper hardware got the upgrade. The budget Galaxy Tab A11 and Tab A11+, released in 2025, qualify for the full seven-year treatment.

Buy a Samsung tablet today and long-term support is taken care of. Anyone holding hardware from late 2023 or earlier, however, remains locked into older commitments.

The Galaxy Tab S8 series already hit its ceiling. The Galaxy Tab S8, S8+ and S8 Ultra arrived in February 2022 and topped out with Android 16 and One UI 8. Their security patches expire in February 2027.

Cheaper tablets from the same generation faced an even shorter window. The Galaxy Tab A9 and Galaxy Tab A9+ debuted in October 2023, yet Samsung capped both at One UI 8. They have one year of security patches remaining before support ends entirely.

Enterprise hardware sits in its own tier. The rugged Galaxy Tab Active5 launched in 2024 with Android 14 and a commitment for four operating system updates alongside five years of patches. That keeps the enterprise slate eligible through Android 18, with security fixes running until 2029.

Samsung distributes One UI updates in waves across different markets and carrier channels, so availability dates will vary by region. Owners can verify their tablet's status by opening Settings, choosing Software update, and tapping Download and install.
