Sonos has started preparing for a phone Apple hasn't officially shown anyone yet.
The company released Sonos 27.2 on Wednesday, bringing version 90.1 of its iOS app with support for the iPhone Duo, Apple's expected foldable iPhone, in both its folded and unfolded configurations. Sonos announced the change in a post on Reddit rather than a formal press release, and the update is already live on the App Store for anyone who wants to install it manually instead of waiting for it to download automatically.
That's a early move. Apple has said nothing public about an iPhone Duo, no name, no specs, no price, in the US or India or anywhere else. What's happening here is that Sonos, which makes its money on app polish and device compatibility, appears confident enough in the device's shape and timing to build for it before Apple has confirmed a thing. Companies do this sort of groundwork ahead of expected hardware all the time, usually based on developer previews or industry chatter rather than anything Apple hands out directly.
The folded-and-unfolded distinction matters for a company like Sonos. A foldable phone changes screen real estate and aspect ratio depending on how it's held, which affects how an app like Sonos's, built around album art, playlists and multi-room speaker controls, lays out its interface. Building support for both states before launch suggests Sonos has had some access to how the software or screen dimensions are expected to behave, even if Apple hasn't said so.
Sonos 27.2 follows the broader Sonos 27 release, which redesigned the app's interface and added new features across the company's speaker lineup. This latest patch is smaller in scope, a compatibility update layered on top of that redesign, but it's the kind of release that tends to arrive right before a major phone launch rather than after one.
Apple's foldable iPhone has been the subject of persistent reporting for more than a year, with supply chain sources and analysts describing a device that folds like a book rather than a clamshell, closer in spirit to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold line than to a flip phone. None of that has come from Apple. The iPhone Duo name itself hasn't been confirmed by the company either, and should be treated as what the industry currently expects rather than a settled fact.
If Sonos's timing holds, an iPhone Duo release could be close. Apple typically confirms new hardware with an event announcement or a quiet newsroom post, and until that happens, everything about size, price and availability stays a leak, however well-prepared third parties like Sonos appear to be for it.
