Adorama shaved $500 off the Sony A7 III on Tuesday, dropping the price of the veteran full-frame mirrorless body to $1,498 when Digital Camera World reported the listing.

That discount positions an eight-year-old camera back in the spotlight for creators seeking full-frame glass on a tighter budget. Sony launched the A7 III back in 2018, and while newer bodies like the A7 IV have taken over the mid-tier spotlight with higher resolution and refreshed menus, the third-generation model remains in active retail circulation.

For photographers eyeing a switch to Sony or stepping up from crop sensors, the markdown matters. Brand-new full-frame sensors under $1,500 have grown increasingly rare across the industry. At Adorama's listed $1,498 price, buyers save $500 off the standard $1,998 price tag without having to gamble on condition through the second-hand market.

The hardware itself still covers the essentials for everyday shooting and travel work. Inside sits a 24.2-megapixel full-frame sensor paired with in-body image stabilization, producing 14-bit RAW files that give editors flexibility when pulling detail out of shadows or preserving highlights. Sony equipped the camera with a hybrid autofocus system made up of 693 phase-detection points and 425 contrast-detection points.

Continuous burst shooting reaches 10 frames per second. On the video front, the camera captures uncropped 4K footage at 24 frames per second. Dual memory card slots provide instant in-camera redundancy, an essential safety net for paid client gigs that many modern entry-level cameras continue to skip.

The body also plugs directly into Sony's mature E-mount catalog. Photographers upgrading from crop-sensor APS-C cameras or looking for a dependable second body can mount existing lenses or start building out full-frame glass without spending several thousand dollars up front on an A7 IV or higher-tier body.

There are clear trade-offs against the newest mirrorless hardware. The autofocus system lacks the deep subject-recognition smarts that Sony introduced in later models. Tracking can struggle in complex action where modern autofocus algorithms lock on instantly, and 10fps burst speeds fall behind current electronic shutter rates. Video creators looking for high frame rates or advanced 10-bit recording will feel those eight years immediately.

Even so, image capture basics have not rewritten themselves since 2018. A sensor that delivered strong dynamic range and sharp portraits back then produces those exact same raw results today.

Adorama listed the $1,498 price online on October 13 without specifying an expiration date for the promotion. Sony continues to sell its newer A7-series bodies alongside it, giving photographers a clear choice between newer computational autofocus and a heavily discounted classic.
