Sony is finally selling an all-black console, but you probably cannot use it. The company announced a PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in Midnight Black on its Japanese blog, priced at 55,000 yen, with shipments starting on November 19.
There is a strict geographic barrier attached. Sony has locked the hardware down so it supports only Japanese language options. Running the machine also requires an active PlayStation Network account registered to the Japan region. For anyone eyeing an import, those software guardrails shut the door before the package even leaves customs.
Inside the dark shell, the hardware remains unchanged. Buyers get the standard PS5 Digital Edition platform equipped with an 825GB solid-state drive, identical to the base version already on store shelves. Sony has introduced zero performance tweaks or thermal revisions here. The visual makeover is the sole change.
Disc Drive Add-on and Digital Shift
Players who still want to use physical media can purchase an external disc drive finished in matching Midnight Black. Sony plans to sell that accessory separately on November 19 for 11,980 yen. Attaching the module turns the digital unit into a conventional console capable of spinning optical discs.
That hardware add-on arrives against the backdrop of an impending deadline for boxed game discs. In text posted on the Japanese PlayStation site, the company reminded players that upcoming releases face a firm cutoff. The translated notice states: "New PlayStation games released from January 2028 onward will be available exclusively as digital downloads through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers. Physical games released before January 2028 will remain playable."
Sony scheduled the hardware rollout for November 19, which puts the Japanese launch directly on the release day of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 6. Sony did not state whether matching dark covers will be released for the PlayStation 5 Pro or whether other territories will ever see an equivalent console bundle.
