Microsoft has quietly rolled out a redesigned Windows Search for Windows 11 — not as a standalone app, but as an integrated system-level overhaul now in active testing with Windows Insiders. It’s faster, leaner, and far more functional than the current search bar that ships with Windows 11 Pro and other editions.
And yes: it finally works like search on iOS or Android, delivering answers inline, not as a Bing-powered detour. The new interface surfaces facts (like actor heights), previews files (PowerPoint decks, photos), and executes commands: “turn on Bluetooth”, “minimize all windows”, “text mom I’m running late”. The last of which fires through Phone Link to your paired Android or iPhone.
This isn’t just UI polish. Microsoft says early tests show “substantial improvements in performance and memory usage”. It’s built on WinUI 3, part of the company’s broader push to modernize core Windows experiences, and it adds no bloat. Typos and synonyms are handled better.
Animations are snappy. The preview pane is large and context-aware. Anshul Rawat, corporate vice president of the Windows product team, confirmed the rollout is underway now in Insider builds. No version number, no release date.
Just “coming months” for general availability in Windows 11. Longer term, Microsoft plans to embed this experience directly into the Start menu and make it responsive to different taskbar positions and display configurations. That work is already in progress, Rawat said, targeting next year. This matters most for Windows 11 Pro users who rely on search for daily workflow: launching apps, toggling settings, pulling up documents, or bridging PC and phone.
It doesn’t replace Cortana or Copilot+. It sits alongside them, sharpening the most basic, most used layer of the OS. What’s missing? Any mention of Windows 10 support.
Any pricing change, Windows Search remains free with Windows 11 Pro, which costs $199.99 in the US and Rs 24,999 in India. No hardware requirements beyond what Windows 11 already demands. No public beta sign-up. Only Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel can access it today.
