This isn’t an Apple feature. It’s a developer-led bypass, and it’s already running on third-gen Apple TV 4K units, with early confirmation it extends to the newly announced 2026 model. The catch? You’ll need a Mac, Xcode, an Apple Developer account, and a willingness to compile and sign your own app.
No sideloading loophole. No jailbreak. Just open-source tooling stitched together by Reddit user Agathorpt. The pipeline is precise: TrueHD Atmos files → decoded into raw PCM + timed object metadata → rendered to a fixed 9.1.6 speaker layout → encoded into APAC → played back via native tvOS APIs.
APAC itself isn’t lossless. TrueHD is, APAC isn’t, but listeners report results indistinguishable from native TrueHD playback on high-end setups. Agathorpt built this to replace the closed-source Native Player, citing transparency and maintainability: “Keeping the implementation closed… leaves everyone dependent on that vendor for fixes and future support,” they said.
“Other players can't reuse or improve that code, and the community can't independently inspect how it handles the audio.” The project leans heavily on Superuser404notfound’s AetherEngine media engine and LibTrueHD decoder. It’s not plug-and-play. But it is functional. And Nuvio, a popular open-source tvOS media player, has already proposed integrating it.
No timeline yet. No official support. But the path is clear. TvOS 26 is required.
