HomeKit Secure Video is finally shaking off its 1080p ceiling. In iOS 27, Apple is expanding its cloud monitoring system to support 4K streaming and local recording on compatible cameras, addressing an issue smart home setups have faced for years.
The bump in visual fidelity arrives alongside an artificial intelligence overhaul designed to kill notification clutter. Both changes land as Apple prepares an upcoming showcase for brand-new home hardware scheduled for next week.
Until now, anyone paying for iCloud+ to store home security footage had to live with 1080p clips, even when mounting expensive 2K or 4K third-party hardware on their walls. The system downscaled the feeds before archiving them in Apple's cloud. With the iOS 27 update, cameras built to output higher resolutions can preserve that detail directly in the Home app.
Just as important for everyday use is how the software handles the flood of motion alerts that security cameras generate.
Smart home cameras are notorious for bombarding phones with repetitive pings every time a courier drops off a parcel, a family member steps onto the driveway, or the wind pushes an open gate. To tame that, iOS 27 introduces live-updating alerts managed by Apple Intelligence.
The feature lives under a fresh Apple Intelligence header within the Home app's settings menu, where users will find a Reduce Notifications switch. When switched on, the system groups connected events that happen around the same time into a single active card on your lock screen.
Instead of watching six or seven separate alerts roll in back-to-back, you see one line that updates dynamically as things unfold. If someone pulls into the driveway, collects letters, and pulls down the garage shutter, the phone rewrites the single notification to reflect each step in chronological order.
That shifts the Home app from dumping raw motion triggers to parsing context. While Apple's software handled face recognition and basic pet or vehicle filtering in earlier iterations, the presentation remained noisy.
These adjustments arrive right before Apple's next round of hardware announcements, where new home gear is expected to take the stage. Existing HomeKit Secure Video hardware makers will now need to confirm which of their current cameras can feed uncompressed 4K streams into Apple's upgraded pipeline.
