Apple Brings M6 Chip To 14-Inch MacBook Pro And iMac

The base MacBook Pro still starts at $1,999 and looks identical to last year's model, with Apple saving any OLED screen for a future redesign.

Apple spent Tuesday swapping silicon rather than reinventing anything. The entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro and both iMac configurations now run on the M6 chip, replacing the M5 that arrived barely a year ago in the laptop and the M4 that iMac buyers had been living with since 2024.

Nothing about the MacBook Pro's shape has moved. It's still 12.31 inches long, 8.71 inches wide, 0.61 inches thick, and 3.4 pounds, with the same mini-LED XDR display running at 3,024 by 1,964 pixels, 1,000 nits of SDR brightness and a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate. The notch, the optional nano-texture coating, the 12MP Center Stage camera, even the port layout, all carry over untouched.

What's different sits inside. The M6 packs a 12-core CPU arranged as two super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores, up from the M5's simpler four-plus-six split. GPU core count rises to 12, each with a Neural Accelerator and hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and there's a dual 16-core Neural Engine for machine-learning tasks. Memory bandwidth tops out at 170GB/s on the 24GB and 32GB configurations, though the base 16GB model is capped at 153GB/s, the same ceiling the outgoing M5 had across the board.

Apple is claiming 1.3 times faster Blender rendering, 1.2 times quicker Affinity image processing, 1.3 times faster Xcode compiling and a 1.3 times bump in unspecified AI workloads versus the M5. Those are Apple's own figures, not independent benchmarks, and nobody has run a production M6 MacBook Pro through Geekbench yet. AppleInsider pointed to early M6 Mac mini scores as a rough proxy, where single-core results came in about 9.7% ahead of the M5 MacBook Pro and multi-core jumped 22%, but a laptop chassis manages heat differently than a desktop one, so those numbers are a ballpark at best.

The quieter addition is Apple's new N1 wireless chip, which brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 to both machines, a real-world upgrade that's arguably more useful day to day than the compute gains.

iMac gets a split treatment

The iMac's refresh is less uniform. The pricier $1,699 configuration gets the full 12-core CPU and GPU, identical to the MacBook Pro's chip. The $1,499 base model gets a cut-down 10-core CPU in a 2+3+5 layout and a 10-core GPU, though both versions share the same dual 16-core Neural Engine and, oddly, both are rated for the full 170GB/s of memory bandwidth regardless of configuration. Storage starts at 256GB on both iMacs, well behind the MacBook Pro's 1TB floor.

Apple hasn't touched pricing. The 14-inch MacBook Pro still starts at $1,999, the base iMac at $1,499, and the higher iMac configuration at $1,699. GSMArena reports pre-orders open October 28, with machines shipping November 6. Apple has not announced India pricing or availability for this refresh.

The bigger question is what comes next. AppleInsider's comparison notes widespread expectations of an OLED MacBook Pro, which would be the first real screen overhaul for the line in years. This M6 update reads like Apple keeping the current design fed with new silicon while that bigger redesign, whenever it lands, gets built separately.
