Apple's flagship Fifth Avenue store in New York is getting dressed up for Friday. Large, rectangular structures have started going up around the store's glass cube entrance, still wrapped in black cloth and white plastic sheeting, but their shape makes it pretty obvious what's underneath: giant iPhone Duo models, the kind of launch-day theater Apple has leaned on for years.
The setup was first spotted by @LChenlz on X and reported by 9to5Mac. No line had formed outside Fifth Avenue as of Wednesday night, though customers have reportedly already been queuing at other Apple stores since Monday, days ahead of the actual release.
This is a familiar playbook. For the iPhone 16 launch in 2024, Apple lit the Fifth Avenue cube in Apple Intelligence colors. Last year it put up giant "Pro" and "Air" displays across several flagship locations. And just last month, the cube went burgundy, silver and blue for the iPhone 18 Pro launch. The iPhone Duo installations appear to be the next version of that same ritual, scaled up for Apple's first folding phone.
Supply looks tight out of the gate. Apple has confirmed that US retail stores will carry a limited number of iPhone Duo units for walk-in customers on launch day, meaning anyone without a reservation is competing for a small pool of in-store stock. The situation is tighter in several other markets. Stores in mainland China, Japan and France will not sell walk-in units at all on Friday, offering in-store pickup only for orders placed online in advance.
That split in availability tracks with what's already showing up in preorder chatter. Buyers who locked in orders on day one are reporting delivery windows pushed into early December, a sign that demand for the first folding iPhone has outrun what Apple can ship at launch. For a device built around a new form factor, with landscape software support, a new hinge and a price point well above the standard iPhone 18 Pro, that kind of early squeeze isn't unusual. It's also good marketing in its own right.
9to5Mac's full review of the iPhone Duo went live this week, ahead of the device actually reaching customers, part of the usual embargo pattern around major Apple launches. The bigger test comes Friday morning, when the covers come off those Fifth Avenue installations and the first walk-in buyers find out whether there's actually enough stock to go around. Apple hasn't said how many units each store will get, and it rarely does.
