China's smartphone market contracted 15.4 percent year over year in the third quarter of 2026, but Apple still walked away with a bigger slice of the business.

Preliminary tracking figures from IDC show Apple captured 17.8 percent of all smartphone shipments across the country during the quarter, climbing from 15.8 percent in the identical quarter of 2025. That advance did not come from an influx of fresh shipments. Deliveries of the iPhone actually slipped 4.3 percent compared to the prior year and fell 15.1 percent from the previous quarter. Most competing brands simply fell much harder.

Huawei took the lead across China during the quarter, locking down 21.1 percent of total volume. That is up from 15.2 percent twelve months earlier, driven by a 17.3 percent year-over-year surge in shipments. Sequential momentum showed signs of cooling, however, as Huawei's deliveries dropped 17.6 percent against the preceding quarter. IDC attributed Huawei's resilience to a broad lineup and measured retail pricing at a time when rivals lifted stickers.

Only one other vendor inside China's top ten managed year-over-year expansion: Lenovo, which nudged deliveries up by 1.1 percent. Looking at quarter-on-quarter moves paints a different picture. Honor, Lenovo, and Samsung all lifted their numbers over the previous three-month period. Samsung recorded a 106.5 percent sequential leap, while Honor stood out as the sole major domestic player to generate sequential growth.

At the bottom of the top ten, Wiko experienced the sharpest drop. Its quarterly shipments plunged 74 percent year over year, dragging its Chinese market presence down to 0.8 percent from 2.6 percent a year ago.

IDC pointed out that Apple's newest phone releases enjoyed better reception among shoppers than anticipated, though a streamlined lineup with fewer available variants trimmed total volume against last year's tally.

Relief for device shoppers in China is unlikely to arrive anytime soon. Expensive internal components and creeping retail price tags continue to stall upgrades, and IDC expects parts costs to stay elevated for several quarters. That squeeze will push replacement cycles out further as buyers balk at higher hardware prices, with market contraction projected to drag through most of 2027.
