Six years after introducing the original orb, Apple has finally updated its smaller smart speaker. The HomePod mini 2 keeps the familiar sphere design and compact footprint of its predecessor, but it swaps the internals for an S10 processor borrowed from the Apple Watch and doubles down on local ecosystem tie-ins.
Priced at $149 in the US and £149 in the UK, the device is up for pre-order now, with deliveries beginning on October 30.
Smarter Siri and S10 Silicon
The biggest hardware change inside is the jump from the old S5 silicon to the S10. That processing boost underpins Apple's incoming Siri AI platform, which aims to make the assistant far more conversational and capable of pulling answers directly from the web rather than tripping over basic trivia. There is a catch, though. Siri AI will not be functional at launch. When the software update arrives, it will launch in English across regions including the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, India, New Zealand, Singapore, and South Africa.
Running that assistant also demands hardware beyond the speaker itself. The HomePod mini 2 must pair with an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone or iPad to process those requests. Once linked, it handles household voice recognition for up to six people, tapping securely into personal data across Messages, Mail, Calendar, Contacts, and Music.
Surround Sound and Soundglow
Apple is not claiming any dramatic acoustic leap over the original model. The single full-range driver setup still produces 360-degree audio, with the S10 chip constantly tuning dynamic range and loudness in real time. Instead, the big sonic feature centers on living rooms.
Paired with the latest Apple TV 4K, users can build a four-speaker surround sound array. The setup auto-calibrates volume and timing by detecting where each unit sits in the room. You cannot mix old and new hardware here. The system requires four HomePod mini 2 units, or matched front and rear pairs combining the mini 2 with full-size second-generation HomePods. Original HomePod minis cannot take part.
Up top, the touch surface gains an interactive visual feature called Soundglow. The panel illuminates and pulses along with treble and bass, pulling shades directly from playing album art or displaying ambient animations during background soundscapes.
Connectivity and Colors
Wireless specs get a long-overdue overhaul. The HomePod mini 2 moves from ancient 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5 up to Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6, cutting down on local network lag. It retains an Ultra Wideband chip for handoff tricks alongside Thread radio support for Matter smart home gear.
The exterior finish options have shifted toward muted tones. Apple dropped the punchy yellow and orange shells from the first generation. The new lineup comes in midnight, white, blue, green, and a new pink shade.
