Apple is restricting iPhone Duo purchases to two units per person in India and the United States — effective immediately on its official online stores.
The limit appears as a hard checkout warning: ‘A maximum of 2 iPhone can be purchased per customer. Please adjust the total quantity of iPhone Duo in your order before checking out.’ Users in both markets have reported encountering the message during pre-orders, which began October 16. Digit India confirmed the same prompt appeared when attempting to add more than two units to a cart.
This isn’t new for all regions. Purchase caps were already in place in China, Singapore, and Hong Kong before the iPhone Duo’s global rollout. But the extension to India and the US marks a notable escalation, especially since neither market had displayed such warnings at the start of pre-orders.
Some early buyers claimed they successfully ordered four units before the cap activated, suggesting Apple rolled it out mid-pre-order window. The timing remains unconfirmed, and Apple has not issued an official statement.
Japan and South Korea face stricter controls. There, Apple’s local websites now state that the iPhone Duo, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max, will not be available for walk-in purchases at launch. Customers must book in-store pickup slots in advance. No in-store inventory will be held for spontaneous buyers.
Industry observers attribute the move to constrained supply and scalper mitigation. The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first dual-screen foldable, built on a new form factor with complex manufacturing and component sourcing. Analysts expect tight initial availability across all markets.
No Indian or US pricing was disclosed in the reporting, but given Apple’s historical tiering, the iPhone Duo is expected to launch at a premium over the iPhone 18 Pro Max. In India, the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at ₹1,59,900. The Duo will likely begin above ₹1,79,900. In the US, the 18 Pro Max starts at $1,199. The Duo is widely tipped to open at $1,499 or higher.
The device launches globally on October 23. Pre-orders opened October 16. Buyers in India and the US who placed orders before the cap went live may retain those quantities, but Apple has not clarified whether those orders are grandfathered or subject to post-purchase review.
No other markets, including the UK, Germany, or Canada, were cited in the reporting as having implemented the two-unit rule. Nor did sources confirm whether Apple plans to extend it elsewhere.
What comes next? Retailers like Reliance Digital and Croma in India, and Best Buy and Target in the US, may adopt similar limits if Apple enforces them at the channel level. For now, the restriction applies only to Apple’s direct online storefronts.
The iPhone Duo’s launch week will test how tightly Apple can balance scarcity, fairness, and hype, without alienating loyal customers who’ve waited years for a foldable iPhone.
