Apple pushed out iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 on Monday, the first major update to the software it released in September, and the headline change is to Siri AI.
The assistant can now recall past conversations, so a user can ask Siri AI about something it suggested a week earlier, like a restaurant recommendation, without starting from scratch. It also pulls from a wider pool of personal data to answer questions: photos attached in Messages, Calendar event attendees, voicemails, and improved results from Safari history and the Reading List.
Siri AI is also landing in five more languages with this release: French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. It remains unavailable in the European Union and mainland China, a restriction Apple has not explained beyond regulatory and market considerations in those regions. The feature itself is limited to iPhone 16 and later models, plus the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
What else changes
A new Excluded Apps setting lets people choose which apps Siri, Search and on-device suggestions are allowed to read from, all in one place. Granular text selection means you can copy just part of a Siri response instead of the whole block.
Messages gets a Suggestions feature that reads context from a conversation and offers quick actions, like adding a Calendar invite after someone proposes dinner plans. Shared Albums in Photos can now have edited captions and comments, warns against duplicate uploads, and will remind participants before an album is set to expire. Photos and Image Playground also pick up SynthID watermarking, a Google-developed system for flagging AI-generated or AI-edited images.
Smaller touches round out the release: the Podcasts app splits its Home tab into New Episodes and Continue Playing sections, the Games app adds a Friends tab showing what people you know have been playing, and the Apple TV app gets Simple Profiles so each household member gets their own recommendations. FaceTime now supports bringing in a third-party sign language interpreter or live captioner mid-call. In the EU, Apple is testing an alternative, more detailed prompt for App Tracking Transparency.
iPhone Duo gets its own notes
Apple published separate release notes for the iPhone Duo, its dual-screen device, since several features apply only there. The update adds Apple Pencil support, a new Edge Light option that brightens the screen edges to illuminate a user's face on video calls, and the same Siri AI memory and Messages suggestions as the rest of the lineup. Macworld also notes Dual Capture and a Multi-view option in the Apple TV app for the device.
One thing missing from iOS 27.2 is the overhauled Health app that reportedly appeared in early betas before Apple pulled it. The company has said a redesigned Health app is still coming before the end of the year, just not in this build.
Apple also shipped iOS 26.7.2 alongside the main release, carrying security fixes for iPhones that haven't moved to iOS 27. Both updates are available now through Settings > General > Software Update.
