Apple has officially declared the 2017 Apple TV 4K — the first-generation model, “vintage”, confirming it has been off sale for more than five years. The designation, posted in Apple’s support documentation and flagged by GSMArena on 11 October 2026, triggers limited service eligibility: Apple will still attempt repairs where parts are available, but no new units remain in inventory, and official support is winding down. No software updates have shipped to the device since tvOS 15.8 in late 2022. It does not run tvOS 16 or later. It remains compatible with older apps and services that haven’t dropped 32-bit or A8-chip support. But increasingly few do. The 2017 model used an A10X Fusion chip, 3GB RAM, and supported HDR10 (but not Dolby Vision). It launched at $179 in the US and ₹17,900 in India. Apple’s current lineup, the 2022–2024 third-generation Apple TV 4K. Runs tvOS 18, uses the A15 Bionic, supports Dolby Vision, Thread, and Matter, and starts at $129 in the US and ₹14,900 in India. A new Apple TV is expected to launch on 13 October 2026, as part of a broader smart home event. Apple has not confirmed specs, pricing, or regional availability for that device. But its timing lines up with the formal retirement of the 2017 unit, and with the end-of-life clock ticking on the 2022 model, which will hit vintage status in late 2027 unless refreshed before then.
