Apple pushed out iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, macOS and its other fall updates on Monday, and the headline feature inside them is language support for Siri AI. The assistant, which launched in English only back in September, now understands French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.
Four more are coming before the year is out. Apple says Traditional Chinese, Norwegian, Turkish and Vietnamese support will arrive by the end of 2026, though it hasn't given a specific date for any of them.
What Siri AI actually does
Siri AI is the version of the assistant built on Apple Intelligence that Apple has been promising for more than a year. It pulls personal context from a user's messages, emails and photos to surface information on command, and it can chain together multi-step tasks on its own, like batch-editing and sharing a set of photos instead of walking through each one by hand.
It also has what Apple calls onscreen awareness, letting it answer questions or take actions based on whatever is currently displayed on a user's screen. That's the part of the pitch that sets this version of Siri apart from the one it replaces: it's supposed to understand context, not just respond to a fixed list of commands.
The EU is still waiting
The language rollout doesn't change anything for users inside the European Union. Siri AI remains unavailable there, a gap that has nothing to do with which languages it speaks. Apple has previously pointed to the EU's Digital Markets Act as a factor in delaying Apple Intelligence features in the bloc, and nothing in Monday's update suggests that's changed. Users under 13 are also excluded from Siri AI regardless of region or language.
That leaves a strange gap in Apple's rollout: French speakers in Quebec or Switzerland can use Siri AI's new French support, but French speakers in Paris can't, at least for now.
What happens next
The four remaining languages, Traditional Chinese, Norwegian, Turkish and Vietnamese, give Apple a path to covering most of its largest markets by the end of the year, assuming the rollout holds to that schedule. Traditional Chinese in particular matters for Taiwan and Hong Kong, markets Apple hasn't mentioned by name but that make up a sizable chunk of its device sales.
What's missing from Monday's announcement is any timeline for the EU. Apple hasn't said whether Siri AI will arrive there in its current form, in a modified form to satisfy regulators, or not at all in the near term. Until that changes, the language count on Siri AI will keep climbing everywhere except the one region that's been asking the loudest questions about it.
