Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is confirmed for Switch 2 — and it’s the first mainline CoD on a Nintendo console in 13 years. That gap reflects how rarely competitive military shooters land on Nintendo hardware. As Wccftech notes, the franchise’s core audience has historically leaned toward other platforms, but Activision’s return isn’t driven by organic demand.
It stems from Microsoft’s 2023 binding agreement with Nintendo, signed during regulatory review of the Activision Blizzard acquisition. The deal obligated Microsoft to bring Call of Duty back to Nintendo consoles. A concession meant to reassure regulators that the IP would remain multiplatform. So this isn’t just a port.
It’s a contractual milestone. And it’s being built by Digital Legends, not Infinity Ward, a detail that explains both the technical approach and the timing. According to Nintendo Life’s Gavin Lane, who attended an official review event, the game runs at a target 30fps and looks like a ‘proper, full-fledged port’.
That’s a meaningful shift from early August hands-on impressions, which Wccftech described as ‘not positive at all’. Something changed between then and now. Likely engine tuning, asset optimization, or both. More concretely, Lane quoted Digital Foundry’s Tom Morgan on two upscaling options available in the build: Filmic SMAA and NVIDIA DLSS.
On Switch 2, DLSS doesn’t upscale from a lower native resolution, it interprets the same pixel data as SMAA, but reconstructs edges and fine texture detail more intelligently across frames. The result? Cleaner lines and sharper door decals and foliage. Still, questions remain.
The very existence of a choice implies a trade-off: perhaps DLSS carries a frame-rate cost, or introduces subtle artefacts when layered over the IW Engine’s rendering pipeline. Neither Nintendo nor Activision has confirmed whether DLSS is enabled by default, or whether players can toggle it freely. Cross-play and cross-progression with PlayStation, Xbox, and PC are confirmed.
No caveats, no regional restrictions. But nothing else is final. No price. No release date.
No official Switch 2 announcement. Not even a name: ‘Switch 2’ remains a placeholder used by outlets and developers alike. All hardware claims, including DLSS support. Come from preview builds and developer briefings, not Nintendo press materials.
The next real checkpoint? A full-motion technical analysis, not static screenshots. From Digital Foundry or a similar outlet. Until then, this is a functional proof point: modern AAA shooters can run on Nintendo hardware again.
Whether they’ll run well enough for the long term remains unproven.
