Cyberpunk 2077 is getting its biggest update of the year on October 22, and this time Nintendo Switch 2 owners are part of the plan from the start, even if they have to wait a few extra days to get it.
CD Projekt Red calls it the Edgerunners 2 Update, version 2.5, timed to Netflix's second season of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime. The headline feature isn't story content, though. It's cross-platform modding, finally extended to consoles.
Mods arrive through mod.io, the same system CD Projekt Red already uses for The Witcher 3 Remastered, according to Beebom. Players on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2 will be able to browse and install player-made mods straight from the in-game menu, no external launcher required. CD Projekt Red hasn't said which mods will be available at launch, only that more will be added over time.
New quests, new guns, new radio
For players who followed the anime, the update adds a questline called Clampdown, a prequel to the Edgerunners 2 storyline that sends V on a job with King's crew, Associate Game Director Pawel Sasko said on CD Projekt Red's REDStreams stream, as reported by Beebom. There's also a gear set built around the character Weak Kingsley.
The Verge reported a new radio station carrying Edgerunners music, while Beebom described two stations covering both anime seasons, pulled from a collection of 16 songs. Either way, it's the first time the show's soundtrack has made it into the base game's airwaves.
Even players skipping the anime get something: a Double Trouble skill that lets V dual-wield pistols and revolvers, a sightseeing feature built around the character Richard Night touring Night City, and five new "Glamdocs" who let players restyle their arm and hand cyberware with new voice lines and animations.
On the technical side, PC players get DLSS 4.5 support and what The Verge describes as glasses-free 3D effects. Console players finally get an FOV slider to widen or narrow their field of view, and save files now group by playthrough instead of piling up in one long list.
The update lands October 22 on PC, Mac, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. CD Projekt Red's patch notes say the Switch 2 and Mac App Store versions follow in the "days to follow," without a firm date.
Cyberpunk 2077 is closing in on six years since a launch rough enough that Sony pulled it from the PlayStation Store for months. It still has no multiplayer mode, a feature CD Projekt Red once promised and later shelved. But console mod support, even in a limited first form, is the kind of thing that keeps a single-player game alive long after its launch window closed. Whether the initial mod selection gives players much reason to care will depend on what CD Projekt Red actually ships through mod.io once the update goes live.
