The Galaxy S27 Ultra’s camera bar has moved — up. A physical dummy unit built from leaked CAD files confirms Samsung is repositioning the entire camera array higher on the back, freeing up space beneath it for magnetic accessories. That’s the clearest, most actionable change so far, not a chip, not a battery, not even a new sensor, but a shift in where the lenses sit.
And it’s already breaking case compatibility with the Galaxy S26 Ultra. No official announcement. No specs sheet. Just a slab of plastic and metal that tells you what Samsung’s engineering team prioritised before launch: magnet alignment over backward fit.
That’s the headline. Everything else is context. The dummy measures 163.76 x 78.25 x 7.97mm, 0.16mm taller, 0.15mm wider, 0.07mm thicker than the S26 Ultra. Barely measurable.
The S Pen slot remains at the bottom. No surprise there. But the camera bar’s new placement means cases designed for last year’s phone won’t line up. Most won’t fit.
Some with oversized cutouts might, but don’t count on it. The redesign also appears to improve stability on flat surfaces, less wobble when placed down, though tapping the screen still induces movement. (Important caveat: the dummy isn’t weighted like the final device, so this is purely observational, not predictive.) Why move the cameras?
To fix a real-world flaw in the S26 Ultra: its large, protruding camera bump interferes with Qi2 magnetic chargers and battery packs. Misalignment leads to slower charging and heat buildup. Samsung hasn’t confirmed whether the S27 Ultra will ship with built-in Qi2 magnets, but the physical layout now makes proper alignment possible.
That’s the functional win behind the aesthetic shift. Rumours point to a revised camera stack: 200MP main, 50MP ultrawide, and a 50MP 5x telephoto, dropping the 3x lens entirely. Android Authority notes the new bar’s shape echoes the iPhone 18 Pro, but this isn’t mimicry. It’s convergence: multiple Android makers are moving toward elevated, flatter camera arrays for the same reason, magnets need room.
Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S27 series in early 2027. No date. No pricing. No regional rollout details.
Just this: a dummy, a measurement, and a decision that breaks backward compatibility to solve a problem people actually have. Galaxy S27 Ultra vs S26 Ultra isn’t about raw numbers yet. It’s about where the cameras sit, and what that lets you stick to the back.
