Google Maps on Apple CarPlay just picked up its own voice assistant. Starting this week, drivers navigating with Google Maps through CarPlay can tap a Gemini icon on the right edge of the screen to ask questions, issue commands, or report what's happening on the road ahead, all without touching the phone.
It's a modest addition on paper, but it closes a gap that's existed for years. Google Assistant was available inside Google Maps navigation when you used the app directly on an iPhone, but that functionality never made it into CarPlay itself. Anyone navigating through Apple's dashboard interface was stuck without a voice assistant baked into the Maps experience. This is the first time Google Maps has offered that kind of conversational layer inside CarPlay specifically.
What Gemini actually does here isn't a mystery, because it mirrors what Google already shipped to Google Maps on Android and iOS last year, and what's been running in Android Auto for a while. Tap the icon mid-route and you can ask multi-step questions, the kind that would've taken several taps and menus to sort out manually. Need to know if there's a faster way around a backup, or want to add a stop without pulling over? That's the pitch. Drivers can also report traffic disruptions, like crashes or hazards, just by speaking, instead of trying to type while moving.
Google hasn't published a detailed list of every command Gemini supports in this CarPlay rollout, and the company's own framing keeps things general: multi-step questions, commands, traffic reporting. Whether it handles things like restaurant searches along a route or complex rerouting requests the same way the standalone app does isn't spelled out yet.
The timing lines up with Google's broader push to get Gemini into as many corners of its ecosystem as possible, from search to Workspace to, now, the dashboard of cars that aren't even running Android. CarPlay is Apple's platform, but Google clearly isn't willing to cede voice interactions there to Siri alone, especially with so many iPhone owners defaulting to Google Maps over Apple Maps for turn-by-turn directions.
For now, Gemini in Google Maps on CarPlay is live in the US. Google says the global rollout is underway, though it hasn't given a timeline for when drivers outside the US, including in India, where Google Maps remains the dominant navigation app, will see the Gemini icon appear on their own CarPlay screens.
The update doesn't require a new version of iOS or CarPlay itself, just an updated Google Maps app, so most users should see it arrive automatically as the rollout reaches their region. There's no word yet on whether Google plans to layer in additional capabilities, like the richer conversational search features Gemini has picked up elsewhere, once this initial release settles in.
