Google Translate’s next update will add a speech-cleaning feature called Smart assist — first spotted in Android app code for version 10.39.34.995726622.4, designed to strip “um”, “ah”, pauses, and verbal stumbles from voice input before translation. It’s not live yet. No launch date, no pricing, no public beta. Just code, buried in the latest build, flagged for Conversation mode only.
Not Listening mode. Not text input. Not offline use. At least not yet.
And not guaranteed for every phone. Gboard’s Rambler, its conceptual sibling, launched exclusively on Pixel 11 devices. Smart assist could follow that same hardware-restricted path. Or it might not.
Google hasn’t said. The feature aims to make real-time spoken translations sound less like a hesitant monologue and more like a coherent sentence, useful when ordering food in Tokyo or asking for directions in Lisbon. But it won’t help if you’re typing, or speaking into the mic outside Conversation mode, or using an older Android device that doesn’t meet unknown hardware thresholds.
Android Authority’s teardown confirms the toggle is coming. Whether it ships globally, or lands first in the US and India, or arrives with the next Play Store push or a later system-level rollout. None of that is confirmed. What is confirmed: the code exists, the name is Smart assist, and it’s built for one thing only, cleaning up your speech before it gets translated.
