A post from the Weibo account Digital Chat Station, a leaker with a mixed but notable track record on Apple hardware, lays out what the iPhone 18e is tipped to look like when it arrives next year. The headline claim is a jump to the A20 chip, which would make the 18e the first non-Pro iPhone to carry Apple's latest 2-nanometer silicon.
That's a bigger deal than it sounds. Apple has historically handed its budget iPhone a chip from a generation or two back. If the leak holds, the 18e would instead debut alongside the newest process node Apple has, something that hasn't happened with the e-line before.
The other change in the leak is a front camera upgrade, which 9to5Mac's Ryan Christoffel flags as the more surprising detail. He suspects that if it's real, it likely means an 18-megapixel sensor, matching what's already in Apple's other current iPhones rather than anything new to the lineup.
Aside from those two items, every other spec in the leak reportedly stays the same as the iPhone 17e. That leaves open a specific question Christoffel raises: whether the 18e keeps its notch or finally gets the Dynamic Island cutout that's spread across the rest of the lineup. The leak doesn't say.
The timing matters because of what's already shipped. Apple launched the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo last month, its only three models for this cycle. The iPhone 18e, the standard iPhone 18 and the iPhone Air 2 are all reportedly being held back for a second wave in spring 2027, a split release pattern Apple has now used for a few years running.
Why would Apple limit the 18e to just two changes? Memory and storage prices have been climbing industry-wide, and Christoffel's read is that Apple may be deliberately trimming the usual upgrade list to protect the model's budget price point. The iPhone 17e launched as Apple's cheapest current iPhone, and keeping that positioning intact would mean eating fewer costs elsewhere.
None of this is confirmed by Apple, and a single Weibo post, even from a leaker with a real history on Apple parts, is not a spec sheet. Digital Chat Station has been right before and wrong before. Treat the A20 chip and the camera bump as the current rumor, not the final word.
Apple hasn't said anything about a spring 2027 event, and won't until it's ready to. Until then, expect more leaks to trickle out on the iPhone 18e, the standard iPhone 18 and the iPhone Air 2 as next year's launch window gets closer.
