iPhone Duo launch: price, specs, and why it won't replace your iPad

It’s 7.6 inches. It runs iOS 27. It folds. But it’s not an iPad — and Apple isn’t pretending it is.

Apple’s iPhone Duo is real. It launched October 26, 2026. Its inner display measures 7.6 inches — smaller than every iPad in Apple’s current lineup, including the new OLED iPad mini (8.5 inches), the base iPad (10.9 inches), and the 13-inch iPad Air and Pro models. The gap between phone and tablet has narrowed to less than an inch.

But it hasn’t closed. Not even close. The Duo runs iOS 27, not iPadOS 27. That distinction matters more than screen size.

Split View arrives on iPhone for the first time: two apps side by side, two windows of the same app, or saved app pairs. You get two Home Screen pages when unfolded, with the Dock and Lock Screen controls running vertically down the hinge side. But that’s where multitasking stops.

The Duo supports exactly two windows. IPadOS 27.2 offers freely resizable windows, tiling, Exposé, and extended display mode over USB-C, features built for work, not just consumption. Apps behave differently too. Most major apps, Slack, Notion, YouTube, adapt well to the Duo’s inner display.

Google Maps does not yet. All are still iPhone apps, rebuilt for folding. On iPad, they’re iPad apps, built from the ground up for larger canvases. Hardware differences reinforce the divide.

The Duo shares the A20 Pro chip with the iPhone 18 Pro and the new iPad mini. That’s a step behind the M4 in the iPad Air (8-core CPU, 12GB RAM) and the M5 in the iPad Pro (10-core CPU, up to 16GB). The Duo’s inner display hits 3,000 nits peak brightness with ProMotion and Always On, brighter than any iPad, including the M5 iPad Pro (1,600 nits HDR peak).

But its cameras, 48MP Fusion Main and Ultrawide, 12MP Center Stage selfie, under-display FaceTime cam, outclass every iPad’s 12MP front and rear sensors. Accessories tell the clearest story. No official keyboard for the Duo. Bluetooth keyboards pair fine, but none are designed for it.

Apple Pencil support arrives later this year, via USB-C, not the Pro version’s squeeze, tilt, or Find My. The Duo holds a Pencil magnetically on its hinge, but there’s no slot, no folio integration. Meanwhile, the iPad Air and Pro support the Magic Keyboard with trackpad and full cursor navigation, a laptop replacement argument the Duo doesn’t attempt.

Pricing reflects the split: iPhone Duo starts at $1,299 in the US. In India, it’s Rs 1,39,900. The new OLED iPad mini starts at $599 ($699 with Wi-Fi + Cellular) in the US, Rs 69,900 in India. The base iPad remains at $449.

So will the iPhone Duo replace your iPad? Only if your iPad use is light: reading, video, messaging, browsing. For anything involving windows, external displays, stylus precision, or keyboard-driven workflows, the iPad, especially Air and Pro, remains in a different class. The Duo fits in your pocket.

The iPad mini does not. That’s the trade-off. Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo began October 26. Shipments started November 1.

Apple says Pencil support arrives “later this year.”
